Safety Notice

The equipment we sell goes out on real water, so this page collects the safe-use basics that apply to it. These notes summarize common requirements under Canadian boating regulations; Transport Canada's Safe Boating Guide remains the authoritative reference, and the manufacturer's manual governs each product.

Before you head out

  • Lifejackets and PFDs: Carry an appropriately sized Canadian-approved lifejacket or PFD for every person aboard. Wearing one is what saves lives; stowing one rarely does.
  • Operator competency: Operating a motorized vessel in Canada, including one powered by an electric outboard, requires proof of competency, most commonly the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).
  • Kill-switch lanyard: Where the motor is fitted with an emergency stop switch, attach the lanyard to yourself before starting. A tiller motor with no operator attached keeps running.
  • Capacity limits: Respect the capacity plate of your vessel for persons, load, and motor power. An overpowered or overloaded boat handles unpredictably, especially in chop.
  • Float plan: Tell someone ashore where you are going and when you expect to return, particularly for solo trips and cold-water seasons on the Atlantic coast.

Equipment-specific notes

  • Lithium batteries: Charge with the manufacturer's charger, keep terminals protected, and never use a battery that has been punctured, swollen, or submerged in salt water. Store batteries away from living quarters where practical.
  • Anchoring and moorings: An anchor or mooring sized below the manufacturer's recommendation for your vessel's length and displacement is a safety decision, not a savings. Follow the sizing guidance before relying on ground tackle in weather.
  • Maintenance and warranty: Equipment that is not maintained to the manufacturer's schedule can fail when loaded, and improper maintenance can also void coverage; see our Warranty page.

These notes are practical guidance, not legal terms. The legal terms that apply to product use and liability are set out in our Legal Disclaimer.
